Successful data engineers play vital key roles and core content in providing consistency across platforms and bite-sized, actionable insights. They demonstrate core skills in complex concepts such as database interactions and high tech skills, ensuring seamless integration of basic data concepts with non-technical teams and cross-functional teams.
Hire data engineers for SQL, pipelines and data warehouses
The job is to move data out of the tools your business runs on and into one place where it can be trusted and queried. Depending on the project, that means SQL and database work, scheduled pipelines, or a cloud warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift. Tell us where your data lives today and which reports or products depend on it, and you interview candidates whose experience matches that setup.
- SQL and databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server and Oracle schemas, stored procedures, and tuning for slow queries
- Pipelines and ETL: batch and incremental loads from your apps, CRM and finance tools, written in Python or built with tools such as Fivetran, Airbyte or SSIS
- Data warehouses: Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or Databricks set up with clear schemas, access roles and spending limits
- dbt and data modeling: tested, documented models and star schemas that analysts and BI tools such as Power BI, Looker or Tableau can use
- Orchestration: Airflow, Dagster or Prefect schedules with retries, and alerts when a job fails
- Streaming and big data: Kafka, Spark and Hadoop for event data and very large datasets
- Search and NoSQL: Elasticsearch with Logstash and Kibana, plus MongoDB and Redis
- Migrations: moving a database to the cloud or to a new warehouse in stages, with checks that totals still match after each step

How is a data engineer different from a database developer?
A database developer builds and tunes the database behind an application: tables, indexes, stored procedures and queries. A data engineer moves data between systems and into a warehouse for reporting and analytics. Many candidates do both, so say whether your main problem is a slow application database or reports that pull from several sources.
Can I hire someone for Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks?
Yes. Skills carry over only partly between warehouses, so name your platform, the tools that load data into it and the BI tool that reads from it. The shortlist is built from candidates who have worked on that platform, and you choose after the interviews.
Can I hire data engineers in the Philippines?
Yes. The Philippines is one of the countries this role is hired from, along with Vietnam, Mexico, Nigeria and South Africa. Tell us your time zone and how much of the working day should overlap with your team, and you meet candidates who can keep that schedule; after you make your choice, the engineer's contract and pay run through DigiWorks.
