Short answer: SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO, or answer engine optimization, helps your content get picked, quoted and linked inside AI answers such as Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It sits on top of it, because almost every answer engine starts from pages it can crawl and index.

This guide explains what AEO means in practice, how the main AI answer tools choose their sources, where AEO and SEO overlap, and a checklist you can work through on your own site. Every claim about how a tool works links to that company’s own documentation.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite when they answer a question. A classic search result is a list of links. An AI answer is a written reply built from several sources, often with small links or cards pointing to the pages it used. AEO is about being one of those sources.

You will also see the terms GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization). They describe the same goal from slightly different angles. For most businesses the practical steps are the same, so this guide uses AEO for all of them.

How AI answers choose their sources

Each tool works a little differently, but the pattern is similar: the system searches an index, picks passages that answer the question well, and writes a reply with links to those passages.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google says there are no extra requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google also says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data for these features. Both features may run several related searches across subtopics, which Google calls query fan-out, so a page that answers one clear sub-question well can be linked even when it is not the top result for the main search.

Microsoft Copilot and Bing

Copilot and the AI summaries in Bing draw on Bing’s index. In February 2026 Bing launched an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools that shows how often your pages are cited and which grounding queries led to them. In the same announcement Bing advised publishers to use clear headings, tables and FAQ sections, to back claims with examples, data and sources, to keep content current with IndexNow, and to describe the same people, products and places consistently across text, images and video.

ChatGPT search

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. Its documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate crawler for model training, so blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search. ChatGPT-User visits pages when a person asks ChatGPT to look something up.

Perplexity and Claude

Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in its results, and says that crawler is not used for model training. Anthropic runs Claude-SearchBot to index pages for search quality, Claude-User to fetch pages when a user asks a question, and ClaudeBot for training. Blocking Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User can lower your visibility in Claude’s answers.

Where AEO and SEO overlap

Most of the work is shared. A page that is blocked, slow, thin or confusing will not rank, and it will not be cited either. Crawl access, indexing, helpful content, a clear page structure, internal links and a fast site all help both. That is why the practical advice from Google and Bing reads like good SEO: write for people, answer the question clearly and keep the facts current.

The difference is mostly in emphasis. SEO often aims at one page ranking for one search. AEO cares more about how each section reads on its own, because an answer engine may lift a single paragraph, list or table row and show it next to content from other sites.

A practical AEO checklist

  1. Lead with the answer. Start key sections with one or two sentences that answer the question directly, then add the detail.
  2. Use question headings. Phrase headings the way people ask, for example “How much does it cost to…” or “What is the difference between…”.
  3. Write passages that stand alone. Each section should make sense if it is the only part someone reads. Avoid “as mentioned above”.
  4. Add tables and lists for comparisons, steps and prices. Bing names tables and FAQ sections as formats that help AI systems reference content accurately.
  5. Back up claims. Give the source and the date for numbers. Answer engines and readers both trust facts they can check.
  6. Keep pages fresh. Update facts and dates, and tell Bing about changes with IndexNow.
  7. Be consistent about your brand. Use the same company name, description and social profiles everywhere, and describe them in Organization structured data. Structured data is not required for Google’s AI features, but it keeps your details clear and consistent.
  8. Check crawler access. Make sure robots.txt, your firewall and your CDN do not block Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot is a separate choice.
  9. Treat llms.txt as optional. It is a 2024 proposal for a file that guides AI agents around a site. It is cheap to add, but Google says it is not needed for its AI features.

How to measure AEO

  • Google Search Console: Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report under the Web search type, so watch impressions and clicks for the questions you target.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: the AI Performance report shows citations, cited pages and grounding queries for Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries.
  • Analytics referrals: track visits that arrive from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com, and the enquiries they bring.
  • Manual checks: once a month, ask the main tools the ten questions that matter most to your business and note whether your site is cited.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking AI search crawlers by accident through a security tool or a copied robots.txt rule.
  • Rewriting every page for AI tools while basic SEO problems, such as unindexed pages or broken links, stay unfixed.
  • Publishing numbers without a source or a date.
  • Hiding key answers in images, accordions that need a click, or PDFs.
  • Expecting quick results. Indexing and citation patterns change over weeks, not days.

When to bring in help

If your team does not have the time to audit crawler access, rewrite key pages answer-first and track citations each month, a specialist can take it on. You can hire an SEO specialist to cover classic SEO and AEO together. If your site runs on WordPress, a WordPress SEO specialist can handle schema, plugins and page speed in one place. Agencies that want to offer this to their own clients can use our white label SEO support.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answers still depend on pages that search engines can crawl and index, and Google says its usual SEO guidance applies to its AI features too. AEO adds a focus on clear, quotable answers on top of that work.

Do I need special code or files to appear in AI answers?

Not for Google, which says no special optimizations, AI text files or special schema are needed. For ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude, the main technical step is to allow their search crawlers in robots.txt.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT?

No. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, so that is the one to allow if you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers.

Does FAQ markup still help?

Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, but a visible FAQ section is still useful. Bing names FAQ sections as a format that helps AI systems reference your content, and readers like quick answers.

How long does AEO take to show results?

It depends on how often your pages are crawled and how competitive the questions are. Plan to review progress monthly and expect changes over several weeks.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

The terms overlap. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is often used for tools that write long answers, while AEO is the broader term for any system that answers a question directly. The practical steps are the same.
