Why hire Ruby on Rails developers through DigiWorks

Rails know-how, not guesswork

Candidates are tested on real Rails work: models, controllers, queries, tests and background jobs. You meet people who have shipped Rails apps, not people who read about them.

Care for existing apps

Many Rails projects are years old. Your developer can read old code, add tests around it and plan version upgrades in small safe steps.

Fast to a working feature

Rails conventions mean less setup. A developer who knows them turns a clear request into a working feature, with tests, in a short time.

We handle the admin

DigiWorks writes the contract, handles monthly payment and deals with the paperwork. The code, the servers and the logins remain yours from day one.

Clear and steady cost

You get a quote that splits the developer’s pay from our service fee. Nothing is folded into a single opaque rate.

Ruby on Rails skills worth testing

When you hire Ruby on Rails developers, test how they work in a real codebase as well as what they list on a resume. Rails hides a lot of work behind its conventions, and strong developers know what happens under them. The areas below cover most Rails work and show what a candidate can do for your app.

  • Ruby and Rails basics: explaining models, controllers, routes and views, and choosing where a piece of logic belongs.
  • Active Record and SQL: writing queries that stay fast, avoiding repeated lookups and adding the right indexes.
  • Testing: writing clear tests with RSpec or Minitest and adding tests around old code before changing it.
  • Background jobs: moving slow tasks out of the web request and handling failures and retries.
  • Hotwire and front ends: building interactive pages with Turbo and Stimulus, or serving a JSON API to a separate front end.
  • Upgrades and gems: moving Ruby and Rails to newer versions in small steps and judging which gems are still worth keeping.
  • Security basics: handling logins, permissions, user input and secrets with care.

Can you help with an old Rails app that has few tests?

Yes. A common first step is to add tests around the parts that matter most, such as payments and logins, before changing anything. After that your developer can upgrade gems and Rails in small steps, checking the tests after each one. Tell us your current Ruby and Rails versions and what keeps the team from upgrading.

Do Rails developers also work on the front end?

Many do. Rails supports server-rendered pages and Hotwire for interactive parts, so one developer can build a full feature. If your front end is React or another framework, a Rails developer can build the API for it. Tell us your setup and we will look for someone who fits.

Is Ruby on Rails still a good choice for a new product?

For many products, yes. Rails is mature, well documented and has a large set of gems for common needs. It fits apps with accounts, data and admin tools. The right choice also depends on your team, your hiring plans and what the product must do, so we are happy to talk it through on a first call.

Service Breakdown

Rails work can be organised in a few ways. The first four cards compare them, and the last two show typical jobs for a Rails developer.

A Rails agency

An agency can run a whole project, design and management included. Its rates cover its own overhead, and the people who know your code may be moved to another client.

An in-house Rails developer

Gives you daily contact and full control. Strong Rails people are scarce, hiring can take months, and your app has no cover when that person is ill or leaves.

A freelancer by the task

Suits a small fix or a single feature. An app that keeps growing needs someone who remembers why the code was written the way it was.

A dedicated Ruby on Rails developer through DigiWorks

One developer works in your repository each working day, joins your calls and writes down what changed. We search and screen; the final choice is yours.

New features and products

Models, pages, forms, logins, payments and admin tools, built with tests so later changes stay safe.

Upgrades and upkeep

Rails and Ruby version upgrades, gem updates, security fixes and cleanup of old code in small steps.

Hi, We're Monica & Rolphy!

We founded DigiWorks after seeing how broken hiring and team building had become: slow, expensive, and limited by geography. Companies were either overpaying locally or struggling to manage remote talent effectively.

We built DigiWorks to fix that. By combining global talent access with structured systems for hiring, onboarding, and performance, we make it possible for companies to build high-performing teams anywhere in the world.

Most business owners waste enormous time and cash because they don’t know how to hire, manage, or scale remote teams, especially technical ones.

We believe this is a fundamental shift. The best companies won’t be defined by where they hire, but by how effectively they build and operate global teams, and DigiWorks sits at the centre of that change.

What does a Ruby on Rails developer do?
A Ruby on Rails developer builds and maintains web applications written in Ruby with the Rails framework. They create features, design database tables, write tests, handle background work and connect outside services. On older apps they also fix bugs, speed up slow pages and upgrade Ruby and Rails versions so the app stays supported and secure.
Rails suits products with logins, forms, data and admin screens, such as marketplaces, booking tools, internal systems and software for subscriptions. Its conventions help a small team move quickly. If your app is already written in Rails, the usual choice is to keep it and improve it. If you are not sure, tell us what you are building and we will say what we would check first.
Look for strong Ruby, a good grasp of Rails models, controllers and Active Record, and the habit of writing tests. Ask about SQL and indexes, background jobs, security basics and Git. For older apps, experience with version upgrades matters. Candidates who can explain what they would change in a messy controller usually have real experience.
We begin with a call about your app, its Rails version and the job ahead. Then you talk with Rails developers who have done similar work. After you choose, we set up the contract and payments, and you decide how much access they get to your code, servers and task board.
The price depends on seniority, the kind of work and the hours per week. Rates begin at $7/hr, and senior Rails developers who lead upgrades or shape large parts of a system cost more than that starting point. Our fee is listed on its own line, so the developer’s pay is never padded.

A guide to hiring Ruby on Rails developers

Ruby on Rails is a web framework written in Ruby. It gives a team a standard way to organise a web app, with models for data, controllers for requests and views for pages. Many companies built their first product on Rails and still depend on it today. This guide explains what Rails developers do, how to judge them and how to set up the work so it goes smoothly. Founders starting fresh and companies with apps that are many years old can both use it.

What Rails developers work on

Rails work falls into a few groups. New features are the most visible: a sign up flow, a booking screen, a payment step or an admin tool. Upkeep keeps the app healthy: bug fixes, speed work, security updates and cleanup. Upgrades move the app to newer versions of Ruby and Rails so it stays supported. Integrations connect your app to payment, email, maps and other services. Some developers like all of these; others are happiest on one, so say which you need most.

How this role differs from nearby roles

A Rails developer is a back-end specialist who knows one framework in depth. Our back-end developers page covers other languages and frameworks too. A full stack developer works on both the server and the screens, which suits teams that want one person across the whole feature. If your system also uses PHP, see our PHP developers. Use this page when your code is in Ruby on Rails, or when you want to start a product in it.

What to decide before you hire

  • Your Ruby and Rails versions, and whether an upgrade is planned.
  • The main work: new features, upkeep, an upgrade or all three.
  • Your database, hosting and how code is released today.
  • How well the app is tested, and who reviews code changes.
  • Whether the front end is Rails views, Hotwire or a separate React app.

Reading a Rails developer’s work

Ask to see code, not only a list of projects. A pull request shows how someone names things, splits logic and writes tests. Look for small, clear changes, tests that describe behaviour and sensible commit messages. Check how they handle queries: a loop that asks the database for the same kind of record again and again is a sign of a common Rails mistake. Ask what they would do about a controller that has grown to far too many lines.

Interview questions to try

  1. A page is slow. How do you find out why, and what do you try first?
  2. Where do you put business rules: in the model, a service object or somewhere else? Why?
  3. How would you add tests to a feature that has none before you change it?
  4. An email must be sent after a payment. How do you do it so a failure does not lose the order?
  5. Tell us about an upgrade you did. What broke and how did you find it?

Real answers include a story about something that went wrong. Be wary of anyone whose upgrades always went perfectly.

Run a small paid task

Set each finalist a small job based on your own app: speed up a slow page, add a small feature with tests, or review a pull request that hides a few problems. Pay them for their time. Then compare the code, the tests and the questions they asked about your product.

Match experience to the work

For a first version of a product you need someone who moves fast and keeps the code simple. For a mature app you need a developer who reads before writing, protects what works and makes changes in small steps. For an upgrade, look for someone who has done one before and can explain the order of the steps. Titles differ between companies, so ask what each person owned.

Give them tools and a rhythm

Open the repository, the task board and a test environment to your developer, and keep every other door closed until it is needed. Hosting, domain names and third-party accounts should stay registered to you. Early on, meet weekly and read every pull request. Once trust is built, a written weekly update and a monthly review of open tasks are usually enough.

Working with the rest of your team

Rails developers work most effectively when tasks are clear and product questions get quick answers. Designers need to know what is easy in Rails views and what needs more code. If you also have a separate front end, agree the shape of the API together before building. A short weekly demo helps everyone see progress and catch misunderstandings early.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Letting an old app fall many versions behind because upgrades feel risky.
  • Adding features to code that has no tests and no review.
  • Running slow tasks inside the web request instead of a background job.
  • Choosing a developer by title and not by the code they have written.
  • Letting a contractor own your repository, hosting or accounts.

Your system may need more than Rails. Our guides on how to hire a back-end developer or a full stack developer, and a hiring walk-through cover those roles.
