Why hire a virtual assistant in India through DigiWorks

Work done while you sleep

When it is evening in New York, it is already morning in India. Your VA can clear the inbox, update the CRM and prepare reports before your day starts.

Good written English

English is used every day in Indian business and higher education. Many VAs have years of experience writing emails and documents for clients abroad.

Used to working with overseas teams

India has a long history of back-office and support work for companies in other countries, so many assistants already know the common tools and expectations.

You pick the person

We shortlist assistants who match your tasks and hours. You talk to them, give them a short task if you like, and decide who joins your team.

No Indian payroll to set up

We handle the contract and pay your assistant in India, so you do not have to set up international payments or local paperwork yourself.

Working with a virtual assistant in India

Hiring someone in another country is easier when you know a few local facts. These are the ones that matter most for day-to-day work with an assistant in India.

  • Time zone: India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of UTC all year, because India does not change its clocks. That puts it nine and a half hours ahead of New York in summer and ten and a half in winter, and four and a half or five and a half hours ahead of London.
  • Hours for US teams: Many people in India who work for overseas clients start in the afternoon or evening so they overlap with the US morning. Others work Indian daytime hours and hand work over while you sleep. Agree on the pattern before you hire.
  • UK, Europe and Australia: For the UK and Europe, a normal Indian working day overlaps with your morning and lunchtime. For Australia, the Indian morning lines up with your afternoon.
  • Language: English is used for official work alongside Hindi, and it is the main language of business and higher education. Your assistant will also speak Hindi or a regional language such as Tamil, Telugu or Bengali, which helps if you have customers in India.
  • Public holidays: India has three national holidays: Republic Day on 26 January, Independence Day on 15 August and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October. Festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Eid and Christmas are widely observed too, and their dates change by year and by state. Ask for your assistant's holiday list at the start.
  • What affects pay: Pay depends on skills, experience, city and shift. An assistant who handles bookkeeping or online store tools usually earns more than one doing general admin, and night-shift work for US hours is worth discussing up front.
  • Power and internet: Ask candidates about their backup power and internet. Experienced remote workers usually have a second connection and a plan for short outages.

Can my virtual assistant in India work US hours?

Yes, if you agree on it before hiring. Many assistants in India work afternoon or night shifts to match the US day. Tell us the hours you need and we will only send candidates who can work them, so there are no surprises after you hire.

Should I hire a VA in India or the Philippines?

Both countries have many experienced remote assistants with good English, so the person matters more than the country. Time zones are the main difference: the Philippines sits closer to Australia, while the Indian working day overlaps more with the UK and Europe. If you are unsure, interview candidates from both.

Is it cheaper to hire a virtual assistant in India?

Usually, yes. Pay in India is lower than in the US, the UK or Australia, so an assistant there often costs less than a local hire for the same hours. What you pay through DigiWorks depends on the skills and hours you need, so ask us for a quote.

How we vet virtual assistants in India

Skills-based assessments

Candidates complete assessments for the work you need, such as writing, research or spreadsheets, before you see their profile.

English and communication

We look at how candidates write and speak English during the process, because most VA work happens over email and chat.

Working hours that fit

We ask every candidate which hours they can work, so the assistants you meet can cover your morning, your afternoon or your night.

Service Breakdown

There are a few ways to get help from an assistant in India. This is when each one makes sense.

Freelancer from a marketplace

Quick to start for small, one-off tasks. You do all the screening yourself, and the person may not be free when you need them next week.

Outsourcing firm or BPO

Good for large teams running the same process, such as a call centre. You usually get a shared team, not one person who learns your business.

Hiring directly in India

You get full control, but you need a local company or an employer of record, and you run payroll, contracts and leave yourself.

Dedicated VA through DigiWorks

One assistant who works only for you, in your tools and at your hours. We find and vet candidates, you interview and choose, and we take care of contracts and payments.

Tasks that suit an assistant in India

Work you can write down as a process: email and calendar, data entry, research, CRM updates, bookkeeping support, and customer email and chat.

Tasks that need planning

Phone-heavy work during the US day means a night shift in India. Say so at the start, so we only match people who are happy to work those hours.

Hi, We're Monica & Rolphy!

We founded DigiWorks after seeing how broken hiring and team building had become — slow, expensive, and limited by geography. Companies were either overpaying locally or struggling to manage remote talent effectively.

We built DigiWorks to fix that. By combining global talent access with structured systems for hiring, onboarding, and performance, we make it possible for companies to build high-performing teams anywhere in the world.

Most business owners waste enormous time and cash because they don’t know how to hire, manage, or scale remote teams, especially technical ones.

We believe this is a fundamental shift. The best companies won’t be defined by where they hire, but by how effectively they build and operate global teams — and DigiWorks sits at the centre of that change.

How much does a virtual assistant in India cost?
It depends on the tasks, experience and hours. As a guide, PayScale lists an average of about 243 rupees an hour for virtual assistants in India, based on 44 salary profiles updated in August 2025. Assistants with specialist skills, such as bookkeeping, earn more. Through DigiWorks you see what your VA earns and what goes to us, so ask us for pricing.
Write down the tasks you want to hand over and the hours you need covered. Then book a call with us. We match you with pre-vetted assistants in India, you interview the ones that fit, and you choose who to hire. We set up the contract and handle the payments.
Most office work that can be done online: email and calendar, data entry, research, customer email and chat, online store listings, bookkeeping support and social media scheduling. Start with tasks you can write down as simple steps, then add more as your assistant learns your business. For inbox work, see our email management assistants in India; for law firms that prefer South African hours, we also place legal assistants in South Africa.
Most assistants who work for overseas clients write and speak English well, because English is widely used in Indian business and higher education. Accents and writing styles differ from person to person, so use the interview to hear them speak and give a short written task.
It is as safe as your setup. Give your assistant their own logins, use a password manager instead of sharing passwords, turn on two-step login and remove access when someone leaves. India also has its own privacy law, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, passed in 2023.

How to hire a virtual assistant in India: tasks, interview questions and costs

A good assistant in India can take a lot of routine work off your plate, often while you are asleep. This guide walks through how to choose the work, set the hours, interview well and get your new assistant settled. To compare with other regions, see our main virtual assistant hiring page.

Decide what you will hand over

Start with a list of tasks that eat your week but do not need you personally. Good first tasks are repeatable and easy to check: sorting the inbox, booking meetings, updating the CRM, building lead lists or entering invoices. For each task, write the steps once, even roughly. A short screen recording of you doing it works just as well. This is the single biggest thing you can do to make the hire a success. Our list of tasks to outsource to a virtual assistant has more ideas.

Set the working hours first

Decide whether you want work done overnight, live overlap with your team, or a mix. Overnight work suits reports, research and inbox clean-up. Live overlap suits tasks where your assistant needs quick answers from you, or where customers expect replies during your business day. Many assistants in India are happy to work an afternoon or night shift for US clients, but it is a real commitment, so put the hours in the job description.

Five interview questions

  1. Tell me about a client you supported. What did a normal day look like?
  2. Here is a messy email thread. How would you reply, and what would you flag to me?
  3. Which tools have you used for email, calendars, spreadsheets and CRMs?
  4. What hours can you work, and how do you handle a power or internet cut?
  5. Tell me about a mistake you made at work and how you fixed it.

Listen for clear, specific answers. Good assistants ask questions back, admit what they do not know and explain how they keep track of their work.

A sample job description

Keep it simple. For example: “We are looking for a virtual assistant in India to support our founder. You will manage the inbox and calendar, keep our CRM up to date, prepare a short weekly report and handle simple customer emails using our templates. Working hours overlap with US Eastern mornings. Must have: excellent written English, Google Workspace, and experience supporting overseas clients. Nice to have: HubSpot and basic bookkeeping.”

What drives the cost

Cost depends on the tasks, the experience you need and the hours. General admin costs less than specialist work such as bookkeeping or online store management. Someone who works your night as their night shift is a bigger ask than someone working normal Indian hours. Through DigiWorks you always see what your assistant earns and what goes to us. For a wider view of budgets, read our guide to virtual assistant pricing.

Plan around holidays and leave

Ask for your assistant’s holiday list in the first week and add it to your shared calendar. Big festivals such as Diwali can mean a few days off in a row, so plan deadlines and cover around them. Agree on how much notice you both need for planned leave, and who picks up urgent work when your assistant is away. A short handover note before any time off keeps things moving.

Make communication easy

Most problems with remote assistants come from unclear instructions, not from skill. Pick one place for requests, such as a shared task list or one chat channel, instead of spreading them across email, chat and voice notes. Say when something is urgent and when it can wait until the next day. Ask your assistant to repeat back anything complex in their own words. A short call once a week to review the work and the plan for the next week helps more than many small messages.

The first three months

In the first week, set up logins, share your written steps and start with two or three simple tasks. Check the work daily and give quick feedback. In the first month, add one new area at a time and agree on a simple end-of-day update. By the end of the third month, your assistant should run their tasks with little checking, suggest improvements and handle new requests without step-by-step notes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Handing over everything on day one instead of building up step by step.
  • Sharing your own passwords instead of giving your assistant their own logins.
  • Leaving the hours vague, then expecting replies during your day.
  • Forgetting Indian public holidays when you plan deadlines.
  • Judging the first week too quickly. Most assistants need a few weeks to learn your style, your tools and your customers before they work at full speed.
  • Giving feedback only when something goes wrong. Saying what went well helps your assistant repeat it.
